This year Kensington and Chelsea council goes cashless with PayByPhone, in an effort to eliminate parking machine crime and to reduce carbon emissions in the borough.

Mobile parking payment services offer a forward-thinking approach as they save tax payers’ money on the maintenance of pay-and-display machines, reduce crime and vandalism of parking machines, and offer an environmentally-friendly solution thanks to fewer vehicles on the road collecting cash from machines.

The council will start taking parking machines out of service on 24 June 2019 and this will continue in phases in order to give residents and visitors time to adjust to the change. By 2020, the borough will be 99% cashless with only a couple of coin-operated meters left in use.

Kensington and Chelsea is the first participant in PayByPhone’s new carbon footprint initiative called
Meters for Trees, which supports local authorities across the UK in reducing air pollution. The council reduces the number of parking machines, and in return, PayByPhone will donate one tree to the borough for every 10 parking machines – whether or not they are in operation – and one tonne of carbon dioxide will be saved in the Amazon rainforest through Portel-Pará REDD, a Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) audited project that combats deforestation.

In addition to an improvement in air quality, cashless parking payments bring many benefits to users. Drivers who use PayByPhone to pay for their parking do not have to worry about carrying cash or cards. They have the flexibility to extend their parking sessions remotely – even directly from their smart watches - and to pay swiftly for the exact amount of time parked.
